Gangtok, Jan 27 (PTI) Former chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari today asked the Centre to reduce circulation of notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 in Sikkim to check corruption.
If the bundles of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes were not available, corrupt officials and ministers would have to carry bigger bags to take the bribe money home, Bhandari, also the state Congress president, told reporters.
The Pawan Kumar Chamling government has institutionalised corrupt practices in the corridors of power, he alleged.
"The menace could be contained only if there is less circulation of notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500."
Bhandari alleged that officials were looting public money as well as central funds in the name of development activities and welfare schemes.
He regretted that the Centre had chosen to turn a blind eye to the 'misdeeds' of the Chamling government.
