GANGTOK, July 27: At a time when the State Government is chanting the mantra of quality education, there are several schools in Sikkim which are even deprived of basic facilities such as drinking water, good laboratory and a decent table and chair to sit on.
This even as the State Government is spending 20 percent of the budget in the area of education, raises question as to how the money is being spent.
One such school undergoing tremendous hardship is Kupurthang Primary School under Rhenock constituency. Established in 1975, the school with strength of 56 students and 11 teachers needs urgent renovation and repair.
During monsoons the teachers have to spend most of the time in arranging safer places for the students as the putrid school roof has posed threat for both the teachers and the students.
“We are facing lots of problem in the school, mainly due to lack of supporting walls in between the classes. This makes easier for anyone to enter rooms from one room to another,” informed one of the teachers.
According to them, the issue has been brought to the notice of the concerned department through Gram Panchayats several times but no steps have been taken up to look into the problems.
Taaza Junior High School under Kupurthang Gram Panchayat Unit has a similar story to tell. This school is running from shortage of computer and science teacher.
Although the department has installed computers in the school, there are no teachers to impart the same, said the teachers.
Moreover for the past three months the school is functioning without Principal which has created more problems for the teachers.
