Nine universities namely Amity University in Uttar Pradesh, ICFAI University in Dehradun, Global Open University in Nagaland, Eastern Institute for Integrated Learning in Management University in Sikkim, Sikkim Manipal University of Health Medical and Technological Sciences in Gangtok, Singhania University in Jhunjhunu, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Dehradun, Himgiri Nabh Vishwavidyalaya in Dehradun and Integral University in Lucknow are now in deep trouble.
These nine universities have been slapped with accusations of violating the norms of UGC as said by Minister of State for HRD D. Purandeswari. Private universities which are established by State legislatures are governed by the UGC Regulations, 2003. UGC stands for University Grants Commission.
She said that these universities were functioning either outside their territorial jurisdiction or within the territorial jurisdiction sans UGC approval. Purandeswari gave her comments in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. She added that Himgiri Nabh Vishwavidyalaya, Dehradun, has shut down its off-campus centre outside the territorial jurisdiction.
