  • image Mahendra Lama seems to be more concerned in the politics of Bengal, and less with development of education in Sikkim. The length of his answer on his interpretaion of the history of Darjeeling and its politics versus what he had to say about the univerity is a glaring example of this fact. Mr. Lama got his opportunity not on the basis of his scholarship or experience , but because he hails from a neighboring region, and his proximity to the current CM.He is the youngest Vice Chancellor in India and has no administrative experince in running any educational center, much less a University. Mr. Lama has to realize that to alleviate the concerns of the Sikkimese people of him being an outsider with limited understanding of the State he has to perform what he has been hired for- start and operate a functioning university. A huge challenge in itself especially for someone who has no such experience, before he indulges in politics of a neighboring state. There are similarities between the Darjeeling hills and Sikkim, but there are huge cultural and other differences as well, that makes Sikkin unique. Mr. Lama has to understand these differences, otherwise he may or may have found his abiltity to make a contribution curtailed, and his current opportunity very tenous.

  • image Its awesome that finally my state got University of its own. I wish I could have got the privileged to study @ the University ..... I passed out from SGC way back in 2002. Hats off to all those involved in making this a success. I am doing my second MS here in US and one day I wish to come back to my homeland and be lucky enough to serve my state and share some of my life experience and little knowledge i gained so far. All the best to Prof. Lama and all the crews involved in it.

  • image when the matter is of pertinance vis-a-vis something determinant to the benefit of the region, i simply fail to understand the hurdle that has to be ideologically placed by "othering" the "self", which of no great consequence. It is incumbent on us to accrue the intellectual advantage that would be rendered by the university that would be formulated, rather than to indulge in the dialects of "self" and "other"...

  • image as we see sir MP. LAMA is diong much for sikkim !!!!!!! but the conception of people in plains rrr irrelevant !!!!! they think they rrr superior to us, in most of the fields regarding education !!!!! we have a bad impression in studies !!!!!!! for places like darjeeling , bhutan , nepal , its a great benefit ,!!!! dis university shud serve the nation , for dis there shud be great steps need to be taken !!! we rrr good in sports fields we shud also concentrate in sports dis will be the best way to bring attention among our people !!! as bhaichung is diong great!!!!! hats off !!!!! he has brought the true colour for us !!!! as a small indentity HE is an INDIAN CITIZEN!!!!! ppl rr aware of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!so we shud give priorities to games !!!!!! let us !!!be the first to take dis step !!!! IT WILL BRING A DRASTIC CHANGE IN OUR PLACE !!!!! so as we come to SIKKIM UNVERSITY it would be hard for sikkim UNIVERSITY to recruit good competative students from places in india !!!!! wat steps shud b taken further ????????? there is a question mark !!!!!

  • image Mr LAMA is contributing a lot in the fields of education. But y is he been called OUTSIDERS by lots of people and there is a shame to Dr biswas being a doctrate also such a henious comment.Mr LAMA move forward our best wishes and prayers are always there for you.

  • image Subha sir, your comments like this will create negative impression in the minds of common people like us.Please, instead of commenting M.P. Lama sir, Let us all compliment him for his historical contribution. Please keep in mind at the end of the day, MP lama sir has nothing to loose.

  • image it's very unfortunate to see an educated person like m.p.lama supporting gorkhaland issue.reality is that the centre is sceptical about gorkhaland because it's practically not feasible.morever for benefit of hills gorkhaland should not happen but en efficient leader should be chosen so that developement funds are not misused.

  • image it is profoundly inspiring to hear him (prof. M.Lama). i feel it is very rare and am proud that we too have personalities like him in our state. i am really looking forward to the works that are done for the betterment fo Sikkim and the whole indian nepali population (viz, darjelling and kalimpong nepalies). i feel that this kind of new visions and enterprise would certainly help all of us to achieve higher levels of development. Wishing him and his collegues all the best wishes!!! thankyou

  • image SIkkim Beauty should be proud of Dr Mahendra P.Lama instead of labelling him as an Outsider ,if the imminent personalities from other states of India can work in Sikkim then why not Dr Lama ? His magnanimous contribution to the people of Sikkim is incredibly wonderful.............Goodluck to Dr Lama and the people of Sikkim
(Posted by ranipriya, July 20, 2008, 7:53 PM)
  • image This concept of labelling < OUTSIDERS > to the exceptionally invaluable members of the society like Mr. Mahendra P Lama is nothing but arrogance limiting the thinking within its boundaries. There are Engineers of I T department, Civil Engineers of Roads and Bridges, Hydro Electricity Company in Teesta river, Doctors and Lawyers and even business men and the Governor, most of them are from outside Sikkim and why not label them as Outsiders and why only Dr. Mahendra P lama? Do you have personal ego clash with him or qualification dash? There are people from other states who has built 5 Star Hotels in Sikkim and do you call them Sikkime? This attitude of division and racism does not do any good at all or is this the incurable disease intact so deep within.

  • image Dr. Biswas looks like u are a outsider as we dont have surname Biswas in Sikkim but we have enough lama surname in sikkim. so just shut up ............
(Posted by jonneyG, July 10, 2008, 9:28 PM)
  • image It was indeed a very informative interview. Well Dr. Mahendra P Lama is a valuable resource who is helping the Sikkim State to form a standard university. It really does not matter where he is from.. The goal of having the university started is what matters..Why is he being considered an outsider???? when he is doing something good for the state... Are we that is Darjeeling and Sikkim people so different....Lets broaden our views and perspective for once please....
(Posted by DLG, June 25, 2008, 12:28 PM)
  • image WHY SHOULD OUTSIDERS LIKE Dr. Lama should be given such a post in Sikkim University? i think there are sufficent educated persons in sikkim?? so why a man from Darjleeing?? is this a dirty politics of Hn'ble CM?? OR sumthing else????????????
(Posted by Dr. Biswas Dey, June 21, 2008, 1:21 PM)
  • image Dear Dr. Lama, It is great to hear that finally Sikkim state is getting a university and it is an absolute most in the region. You mention of world class university but I think the priority should be serving the needs of the local context (Sikkim, Darjeeling, Bhutan and Nepal). I think subjects like International Development Studies, Natural Resource Management, Peace and Cultural Studies and flexibility in the way the curriculum is designed to reflect the local cultural context and life of the people would be highly valuable. Some countries like Canada offer very rewarding and research focus disciplines and many inter-disciplinary studies. You could look for models and in this country there good models available for high quality post-secondary programs. If you would like to explore more let me know. Quality of the faculty is another determinant of a good quality institute and there some good programs offered in Bhutan too.

  • image Dear Sir, it seems that finally we got our geo-political head. I am an ex-student of Darjeeling Govt. College and I am proud that I had been taught by some excellent professors, among them many have come from presidency college. The college lost its glory because the dirty politics played by students union leaders, who have learnt the art of taking bribe by admitting hapless students and creating nuisance. But teachers always encouraged us to become competitive inspite of ethnic differences with them. Therefore, my humble suggestion is that instead of talking about politics, churning rhetoric against bengal, Dr. lama you create an ambience where people can start thinking positively to compete and get success. Dont mix up petty politics while building up a world class university. Even Before its inception, if we start talking about dooars, Darjeeling hills, University for Nepalis, we are simply showing our narrow mindness. We can earn respect only when we will respect other, for which you are our brand ambasaddor. All the best Dr. Lama, We will certainly acheive Gorkha Land, not only for the gorkhas but for all peace loving people of this region.

  • image A world class university is absolutely necessary for the region. My best wishes to Prof.Lama for the success of your mission. Under your leadership, let's hope that Sikkim University will grow up not only to shed light upon the people who have been living for years in the dark in this area but also be able to produce world class leaders in everyfield. • image Regards Mr. Lama, knowing you from Delhi i feel proud for your professional success. we need to realise that layman would not know of mass mobilisation and theories involved with it, political motive, Ghising being a puppet of autocratic state govt. but i had probably more expectations from the educated class of nepalese in directing the various differences associated there. what is happening in Darjeeling is obvious theory of Aristotle. but people of your stature could play a significant role in changing minds of the youth, and hope we still acheive it through further amendments in the texts related to your field of Study at university n school level. wish you luck to prove your mettle as the VC!! i would be great to see you give the vast knowledge you have in International HIstory and Asian studies in whatever way you can.
(Posted by Ranjana Pradhan Rai, March 2, 2008, 11:00 AM)
  • image looks like u need to prepare more and ask more important question. when is the university likely to enroll students? please avoid mixing education and politics question..............
