Gangtok, July 02: Two districts of Sikkim, South and West, have been selected under the North Eastern Region Livelihoods Project (NERLP) for sustainable development in view of their relative backwardness as compared to the other parts of the state, an official release said on Thursday.
The decision was taken in this regard at a meeting held with the officials of World Bank, International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) at the Tashiling Secretariat today which was chaired by the Chief Secretary N D Chingapa, the release said.
The Rural Management and Development Department (RMDD) will be the nodal department for implementation of this project in South and West Districts, it said, adding that the financial institutions, local NGOs, farmers' groups and the state government will work in close coordination with each other for successful implementation of the project.
The project is based on IFAD-assisted North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project (NERCRMP) which has been successfully implemented since 1998 in two districts each of Meghalaya, Assam and Manipur.
