HOW DID A SWISS PHOTO GRAPHER FALL SICK FOR SIKKIM?

 Markus Wild is so besotted with Sikkim that he has planned to make the documentation of the unique photographs relating to the socio-culture of Sikkim and to exhibit the photographs across the world.

But, before documenting, at least, Markus, the Swiss photographer who is in this profession for the last 35 years and taught visual arts in Switzerland wants to exhibit these photograph in Sikkim for a month so that the local people would also get to know about the works and objective of Markus.

The Swiss photographer who came in Bhutan in 2005 for working with a Swiss project has also made a document of the photographs of Bhutan. And actually since his living in Bhutan his to love Himalayan region had begun. Then Markus set foot in Sikkim first time in April a month ago. Within a month he did a lot.
The result is, he has been successful to organize his solo photo exhibition at the first floor of Rachana Books, Gangtok, from 30th May for a month.

On his photographs in the exhibition, Raman Shrestha, proprietor of Rachana Books and one of the members of Aperture Culture, organizer of the exhibition, said “now we are releasing how beautiful is Sikkim. But it is ironic that a Swiss gentleman has come here to show us how beautiful Sikkim, which has already got an unofficial tag “Switzerland of the East”,”
Regarding his photographs, Markus says today most of the photographers run after the celebrities “They don’t care village folk and rural life. But, I want to focus more on village environment. They (village folks) are as more important as the celebrities as because they are simple and great,” says Markus pointing to a smiling child in his photo

Delving into the photographs, Shrestha further said Markus’s friendly and uninhabited nature and his ability to make friends instantly without being intrusive gave him the rare access to the private lives of the people of Sikkim. These are evident in his subjects, mostly portraits.

On the other hand Markus go to adds photo exhibition enable people to know lot of the socio-culture of any country. “It is an easy medium to tell people something and know about anything. That is why, I have chosen to exhibit these photos in other countries especially in the West and they will realize there are people who are still rooted in their culture, Markus rounded off.
