Chewan K. Dahal GANGTOK, 30 JUNE: In a bid to promote transparency and accountability and to create awareness about legal methods in the state, the Sikkim High Court released its first quarterly newsletter on Monday. The state Governor Mr Balmiki Prasad Singh, chief minister Mr Pawan Kumar Chamling (in picture) and the chief justice Mr Aftab H Saikia were present on the occasion. Addressing the function, Mr Balmiki Prasad Singh recounted the monumental role played by the state high court in the justice delivery system in the state. Mr Chamling, in his address, termed the state as a peaceful one with the least number of disputes. He also appreciated the role of the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority in providing legal aid to the poor. According to the court sources two mediation centres have been operating in Gangtok and Namchi in south district, while two more at Mangan and Gyalsing in north and west districts would be launched soon. Terming the 87 cases pending in the High Court as a negligible number, Justice Saikia stressed on the need of a joint cooperation in making Sikkim a “litigation free state”. |
